It's hard to mention Disney and not think of the word "princess." It's understandable because of all the Disney movies, both animated and live-action, that have some sort of princess in the story but it's not entirely accurate.
After all, characters like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck predate Disney's princess films. Then there are also shows like The Mandalorian proving that Disney also produces action shows (though admittedly, Star Wars was an acquired property).
But overall, the different Disney princess films have made such a huge impact on Disney's image. Let's look at how much Disney princesses have evolved throughout the years and how they compare against each other.
1 - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1938)
Via Disney
This one's a real classic. But the story is a bit simplistic with Snow White not having as much character development with the prince following classic fairytale tropes. If you've watched it once, then that's more than enough.
2 - Cinderella (1950)
Via Disney
For a movie meant for children, the film didn't hold back in showing just how cruel Cinderella's stepsisters could be. As in, it's a recurring theme throughout the movie and you could almost heave a sigh of relief at the happy ending. Cinderella is portrayed as the silent martyr but that's probably not surprising for something made in the 1950s.
3 - Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Via Disney
Disney's live-action remakes often don't measure up to their animated originals. Unfortunately, Beauty and the Beast is no exception. It's not really Emma Watson's fault because it's the enchanted objects that came out weird. Also, Belle's dress in real life doesn't have the same effect as the animated one.
4 - Cinderella (2015)
Via Disney
The Cinderella live-action movie is actually one of the few exceptions where the remake is slightly better than the animated original. Of course, there wasn't much that they could do to the story anyway but Hayley Atwell was memorable playing Cinderella's mom. The costumes are also better but that shouldn't be surprising considering the original was from 1950.
5 - Frozen II (2019)
Via Disney
The folks at Disney pulled out the stops for Frozen II and fans were treated to a stunning visual treat. While it didn't have the same impact as the first film, most sequels don't anyway. It was also refreshing to see a different approach to handling a Disney princess story and Nokk the water horse was funny.
6 - The Little Mermaid (1989)
Via Disney
While people may be put off by Prince Eric marrying Ariel when she was only 16 and only knowing her by her voice, The Little Mermaid remains timeless because of all its songs. All the songs in the movie are easy to sing along to.
7 - Aladdin (2019)
Via Disney
While no one can top Robin Williams' genie, Will Smith still did a bang up job. But this list is about Disney princesses and fortunately, the live-action version gave more recognition to the character of Princess Jasmine. That alone makes it a bit better than the original.
8 - Sleeping Beauty (1959)
Via Disney
One example of an oldie still being a goodie, the artistic styles are amazing even considering it was done in the 1950s. And of course, having a real good villain like Maleficent only helps matters. But don't count out Prince Phillip because he really sacrificed a lot for the good of the kingdom.
9 - Pocahontas (1995)
Via Disney
While Pocahontas may not be a princess in the traditional sense, her strength of conviction exudes an aura of nobility nevertheless. You can see it throughout the whole movie as she forges her own destiny and you can't help but shed a tear at the ending.
10 - Tangled (2012)
Via Disney
It's enjoyable watching the chemistry between Flynn and Rapunzel. But what sets this film further apart is how well the other characters fit into the story, including the villain! And if you weren't tempted to buy a cast-iron skillet once you reached the end of the movie, then you need to take a long hard look at yourself.
11 - Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Via Disney
This film scores high points in terms of character development. The Beast, despite his animalistic tendencies, learns to tame his inner animal. Belle, in the meantime, also learns to be more understanding while still being able to stand up for herself. Best of all, you can even enjoy the whole movie just for the catchy songs themselves.
12 - Brave (2012)
Via Disney
One unique theme about Brave is that dives further into the relationship between mother and daughter. In this case, between Merida and her mom. And unlike similar movies where the princess ends up losing at least one parent, for this one we see Merida ending up becoming closer to hers. It just goes to show that you don't need a prince to get your happily ever after!
13 - Mulan (1998)
Via Disney
Mulan willingly puts herself in danger not out of a desire for glory or to please a man. Rather, she joins the army because of filial piety. It doesn't matter that she's untrained and not as physically strong. She adapts and doesn't let adversity deter her. More importantly, she uses her quick wits to achieve results.
